Zoned-RAID for Multimedia Database Servers

چکیده
This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant disk subsystem named Zoned-RAID (Z-RAID). Z-RAID improves the performance of traditional RAID system by utilizing the zoning property of modern disks which provides multiple zones with different data transfer rates in a disk. This study proposes to optimize data transfer rate of RAID system by constraining placement of data blocks in multi-zone disks. We apply Z-RAID for multimedia database servers such as video servers that require a high data transfer rate as well as fault tolerance. Our analytical and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of ZRAID to conventional RAID. Z-RAID provides a higher effective data transfer rate in normal mode with no disadvantage. In the presence of a disk failure, Z-RAID still performs as well as RAID.

Using bulk arrivals to model I/O request response time distributions in zoned disks and RAID systems
Useful analytical models of storage system performance must support the characteristics exhibited by real I/O workloads. Two essential features are the ability to cater for bursty arrival streams and to support a given distribution of I/O request size. This paper develops and applies the theory of bulk arrivals in queueing networks to support these phenomena in models of I/O request response ti...
متن کاملHigh Availability in Clustered Multimedia Servers
Clustered multimedia servers, consisting of interconnected nodes and disks, have been proposed for large scale servers, that are capable of supporting multiple concurrent streams which access the video objects stored in the server. As the number of disks and nodes in the cluster increases, so does the probability of a failure. With data striped across all disks in a cluster, the failure of a si...
متن کاملQueueing network models of zoned RAID system performance
RAID systems are widely deployed, both as standalone storage solutions and as the building blocks of modern virtualised storage platforms. An accurate model of RAID system performance is therefore critical towards fulfilling quality of service constraints for fast, reliable storage. This thesis presents techniques and tools that model response times in zoned RAID systems. The inputs to this ana...

The storage and bandwidth requirements of digital video and audio exceed those that can be supported by conventional file servers. Despite the emergence of new compression algorithms capable of providing extremely high compression ratios, there is still a challenge to provide optimised storage services capable of storing 1000s of hours of multimedia data and providing simultaneous access to hun...
متن کاملMulti-RAID Queueing Model with Zoned Disks
A queueing model is developed for a multiRAID storage system implemented on modern zoned disks, using fine, accurate access time functions. An extension of a previous analytical model that utilizes Fork-Join composition of M/G/1 queues, it describes zoning directly in terms of the probability distributions or moments of the model’s components, such as seek time, rotational latency and data tran...
